BIOMASS GASIFIER BASED CREMATION FACILITY
Cremation of Dead bodies is a custom at many places and presently done by either direct wood burning or using Electrical Crematoriums. Either methods have got their own advantages and disadvantages. Electrical Cremation even though looks neat, it takes more time and needs huge power to the extent of 100 KW. Constant Power supply is difficult at many places. The running costs are very high.
Open Wood burning even though is adopted at many places, creates pollution and is inefficient. But due to simplicity it is followed. Till now no one thought that Crematoriums can be built to look clean and beautiful with gardens. It is a socially neglected place with no one interested to stand even for few more extra minutes. By developing Crematoriums based on Thermal Gasifiers, these can be built as a neat facility.
Cremation Facility
The facility consists of Cremation bed fixed on a moving trolley. The Burner is fitted to one end of a fixed dome with refractory lining inside. The body will be kept on the trolley bed and Rituals if any, can be completed before pushing the trolley with the dead body into the fixed dome. The dome contains a pair of entry doors and after pushing the trolley inside, the doors will be closed.
A Wood Gasifier is used for generation of gas and supplied to the special burner. The length of the flame from the Burner will be around 6’ long and the flame engulfs the full length of body. A temperature of around 900 Deg.C is attained inside the chamber. This high temperature flame will dissolve the body very fast. It is economical in running at the same time being environmental friendly.
SALIENT FEATURES
- Wood is the source of energy for this. It fulfills the sentiments attached in this regard and at the same using modern technology.
- The system runs on 1 HP Blower thereby requiring minimum electric power. In contrast Electrical Cremations needs huge power of the order of 100 KW.
- Economical in operation (around 50% cheaper compared to open wood burning).
- Operation is completed very fast (operation completed sn 80 Minutes compared to 3-4 hours time requirement by open wood burning).
- Simple and robust design for easy operation and maintenance. (Unskilled
persons can operate the system).
- Clean and neat surroundings. This is fully in contrast to the present systems where one wants to avoid even looking at the place.
- Environment friendly.

ADVANTAGES OF BIOMASS (WOODY) GAS OPERATED CREMATION AGAINST OPEN FIRE BY WOOD
|
FIRING OF DEADBODY IN OPEN AIR
|
BIOMASS GAS FIRED CREMATION
|
| Thick size wood (3” to 6” thick) is required which reduces forest trees. |
Thin Size (1” to 3” Dia) Barks of trees is required and also during the season of cotton, cotton stalk can be used. |
| The price of thick size wood is approx. Rs.3/- to Rs. 3.50 per Kg. |
The price of thin size barks of trees is approx. Rs. 1.50 to Rs.2.00 per Kg. and cotton stalk is available at free of cost. |
| Approx. 400 to 600 kg wood is used for a dead body disposal. |
Approx. 125 to 150 kg wood is used for a dead body disposal due to closed chamber firing with a single 6-8 feet long flame flashes directly on deadbody. |
| The disposal of a deadbody requires 2 to 3 hours time. |
It takes only 60 to 80 minutes. |
| The cost of disposal of deadbody is approx. Rs. 1200 to 1500. |
The cost of disposal of a deadbody is approx. Rs. 250 to 300 only. |
| Firing of more wood creates more pollution. |
Lowest pollution with less smell. |
ADVANTAGES OF BIOMASS (WOODY) GAS OPERATED CREMATION
AGAINST ELECTRIC CREMATION
|
ELECTRIC CREMATION
|
BIOMASS GAS BASED CREMATION
|
| 90 to 100 KW capacity power connection required (i.e. High Tension Power) and hence investment towards Power Transformer, D.P. etc. to be done by the Municipality. |
Only 5 .H. P. Single or Three Phase connection is required. |
| Electric Cremation does not creates flame and hence 8500C and more temp. to be taken in the whole chamber (i.e. Insulation bricks and metallic portions) by Ele. Heating which requires 2000 to 3000 Kwh (unit) power initially, thereafter approx. 150 Kwh per a deadbody requires. If there is a long period between disposal of two deadbodies, the temp. in chamber goes down and required more power, and hence the cost of disposal of a deadbody is approx. Rs. 1000 |
Biomass gas burner flame is 6-8 feet long which flashes directly on deadbody. There is no need of rising chamber temp. The temp. Of flame is more than 11000C. Inferior quality of wood (i.e. 1” to 3” dia wood barks or cotton stalks) is required approx. 125 to 150 kgs. per deadbody. The cost of disposal of a deadbody is approx. Rs. 250 /- |
| There is huge investment. Approx. Rs. 45 to 50 lakhs. |
Very low investment. Approx. Rs. 15 Lakhs. |
| Maintenance is very costly. Only skilled engineer can be done. |
Very low maintenance cost. Unskilled workers can be maintained. |
| More built-up space required than Biomass Gas Operated crematorium. |
Less Built-up space and some open space (for wood storage) is required. |
| Creates more smell and hence water scrubbers are required. |
Very less smell due to direct flame firing. |
N.B.:- We are also converting Electric Operated Cremation facility to Biomass Gas.
